Unlocking education, nieuwsbrief no. 1

Afgelopen weekend hebben de ondertekenaars van de petities -als zij daar toestemming voor hebben gegeven- een nieuwsbrief ontvangen met een update over de stand van zaken in de campagne Unlocking education, for growth without limits. De nieuwsbrief staat ook online in onze Pleio werkruimte en op deze site.

Adobe and Microsoft underscore importance of the Unlocking education-campaign

No, these two commercial entities didn’t sign-up for our campaign (yet ), but via their own attitudes towards their proprietary webtechnologies Flash (Adobe) and Silverlight (Microsoft) their underscore efforts to make the use of Open Standards mandatory for all publicly-funded institutions, especially for online  educational environments. Two recent news articles emphasize the need to move to Open Standards: (1) Adobe decided to stop developing it’s Flash Player for mobile devices (switching to Adobe Air instead, the development of which won’t continue for the Linux platform) and (2) even Microsoft watcher Mary Jo Foley now speculates openly that the upcoming release of Silverlight might well be the end-of-the-line. Perhaps Silverlight might change, or reincarnate in a different form, but it does prove the folly of relying on a single-vendor proprietary technology.

First, there was the problem, followed by a column, an open letter to parliament, a petition for my Dutch-speaking readers and then a petition for expressing international support for what became a campaign to make the use of open standards mandatory for all school institutions. After hitting the frontpage of Slashdot international interest mounted with requests to provide regular updates about the campaign for non-Dutch speaking readers. Which I’ll gladly do. So, what is happening at the moment?
